Mtwapa is a fishing village that seems to be growing. It has with several restaurants offering gourmet meals. The best of which are the Moorings an actual part floating restaurant, and the
The Mtwapa Creek is becoming a popular destination for hiring yachts and where many game fishermen come to hire boats and tackle.
Waterskiing can be arranged and small motorboats are available for hire.
Dhow tours are offered by Kenya Marineland in Mtwapa that feature snorkeling opportunities, a visit to the Marineland Aquarium and a tour along the coast.
The aquarium houses marine life from the deepest parts of the Indian Ocean, which can be viewed from a glass-sided underground tunnel.
Several companies based in Mtwapa offer deep-sea fishing for marlin and other large billfish.
The architectural remains of a Swahili settlement, abundant wildlife and idyllic location make Mtwapa a definite stop as you head north of Mombasa.

Jumba la Mtwana is a national monument just north of Mtwapa. Occupied between A.D. 1100 and 1750, the ruins of Jumba la Mtwana are a Swahili slaving settlement with some fascinating structures that still remain including stone mansions and tombs of the privileged.

Archaeological evidence suggests that the people of Jumba were committed to the Islamic virtue of cleanliness. Many of the houses contain the remains of water cisterns, washing platforms and stone lined latrines.

There are three mosques on the site but the Mosque by the Sea stands out from the rest. It is the best preserved with a cistern that was rebuilt in 1975 as a defense against the sea.

During the day it is safe to walk around, but be aware of the places around you. I often see some Westerners walking off the main road carrying a heavy stick supposedly for walking with. It is the same as any poor village, town or city that has many people not working and having no income. I would not walk around at night in the dark back streets. Get a taxi to and from the night spots here and anywhere in Kenya. This area has an abundance of taxis and the taxi driver if asked, will wait for you. Using the same reliable ones ensures your wellbeing. Always be aware of your surrounding anywhere in Kenya.

The Moorings Dhow

Dhow trip from Moorings to the Mtwapa Creek

The Moorings Dhow excursion Mombasa north coast

The Moorings Dhow is a typical Arab sailing vessel with a capacity of up to 20 people.
Dhows are still used for commercial journeys between Zanzibar and the East African coast using only sails as a means of propulsion.
The Moorings Dhow has been modified with very comfortable seats and an engine to be able to move even without wind. You can book our dhow in various possibilities to enjoy the nature, spectacular sun sets and the silence of the Mtwapa creek. Our experienced staff will cater for your needs, serve traditional bitings and Arabic coffee with Halwa (Arabic sweets) while you smoke our Shisha (water pipe) with different flavours (no drugs, no nicotine).

Take a trip up Mtwapa creek with us and see what incredible beauty lies just so near to the busy Mombasa Malindi road.

Have an aperitif combined with the sun set as a pre dinner trip or a full barbeque dinner on board of the dhow with entertainment and perfect service.
