Here in the area outside the hotels, and apartments it is very safe to walk out of the hotels and wander around amongst the locals and leisurely go in out of the small shops. This applies to the evenings as well, when you can go out to the bars for entertainment and to the restaurants for a meal. Out of the immediate local area at night it is best to go to and from the area in a taxi. There are tourist police in uniform and in plain clothes, patrolling this area between the hotels and a little way up the road towards the junction that leads to Mtwapa and Bamburi.

These Shanzu apartments are really top class with excellent kitchen facilities for the visitor, most are now complete with the others just needing the small finishing touches like this one, just a TV stand. The owners are a British builder Peter and his Kenyan wife who have very high standards. The grounds inside the secure compound are three quarters finished, just one corner needs to be tidied up. These Shanzu Beach apartments have had a lot of thought put into them and are disable person friendly with ramps to ground floor apartments. The cost of a taxi to the heart of the Shanzu Beach area is about 100 Ksh [2010], the able bodied person can walk it in 2-5 minutes depending on the pace, the local road is waiting to be finished by the local Shanzu Council. The owner has security always on the gate 24-7. Even if you do not stay here, it is worth looking around the complex just to see what is available for next time when you come to the Shanzu Beach area.
